International Anthem presents a dual album release show for their Fall 2017 artists MAKAYA MCCRAVEN and IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS, with a special guest closing performance by DOS SANTOS, the newest member of the International Anthem family (album coming Summer 2018). Sets by the three bands will be buffered by DJ sets from DAVE MATA (Royal Hands), JOCELYN BROWN (Clerical Error) and JULIA DRATEL (Don Giovanni).
MAKAYA MCCRAVEN's new Highly Rare LP (officially in stores November 17th) features the quartet of NICK MAZZARELLA (alto saxophone), BEN LAMAR GAY (cornet, diddley bow, voice), JUNIUS PAUL (bass) and MAKAYA MCCRAVEN (drums), and has been called "dreamy...a joy to behold" by Paste Magazine, "taut, groove-filled" by Time Out Chicago, and "the true sound of the Chicago underground" by Sounds of the Universe. MAKAYA MCCRAVEN's debut International Anthem release In The Moment made over a dozen critical "Best Albums of 2015" lists (including LA Times, Observer, NPR, Pop Matters) and for 2 straight years (2016, 2017) Makaya has been voted "Best Jazz Musician in Chicago" by the Reader's Poll of the Chicago Reader.
IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective from Philly/NY/DC fronted by poet/vocalist CAMAE AYEWA (aka MOOR MOTHER) alongside KEIR NEURINGER (alto sax), AQUILES NAVARRO (trumpet), LUKE STEWART (bass) and TCHESER HOLMES (drums). Their new self-titled LP, which is a collaborative split release by International Anthem with DON GIOVANNI RECORDS (officially in stores December 1st), has been called "amazing" by BBC radio legend Gilles Peterson, "a harrowing narrative journey" by Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader, "furious" by Stereogum, "one of the most powerful and relevant works you'll encounter this year" by The Quietus, and NPR Music says "Irreversible Entanglements' self-titled debut wakes the frozen body to move, the dead mind to react, the mute mouth to scream resistance."
DOS SANTOS is one of the definitive bands of the contemporary Chicago music scene – a relentlessly-working, massive-sounding, stadium-ready quintet whose progressive compositional and creative conceptual approach to Latin dance music, classic ballads and psychedelic guitar rock pushes the boundaries of all those genres into an entirely new, as yet totally unexplored zone. The Chicago Reader says "it seems only a matter of time before the combo becomes a key player on the country's world-music circuit." DOS SANTOS's first full-length LP is scheduled for Summer 2018 release on International Anthem.
This will be a special ‘In the Round’ performance. The stage will be located in the center of our main floor and the audience will encircle allowing for a 360 degree experience. ‘In the Round’ performances create a rare opportunity to see artists perform up close and personal from a variety of angles.
For an example of our ‘In the Round’ shows, check out the following video of Tortoise’s 2016 performance with this setup: http://bit.ly/2soFhN9
Keep an eye on the merch table at the show for limited edition 2017 ‘In The Round’ posters created by Ryan Duggan. All posters are made in an edition of 60 and silk-screened on corrugated pizza-grade cardboard circles.
